A new report from Terminix has delivered some itchy news for Ohio residents: the Cleveland-Akron-Canton area ranks as the third-most bed bug-infested region in the United States. The findings come from the company’s annual “Top 50 Bed Bug-Infested Cities in the U.S.” report, which tracks where these persistent pests are most commonly found.
The report highlights an ongoing issue across the Buckeye State. In addition to the Cleveland area’s high ranking, Dayton landed at number 11, Columbus at number 12, and Cincinnati came in at number 14. Four Ohio cities within the top 15 illustrate just how widespread the issue has become across the region.
Bed bugs are known for being difficult to detect and even harder to get rid of. Terminix recommends vigilance. especially when traveling. as a key to prevention. The pest control company suggests inspecting mattress seams, headboards, and furniture for signs such as small rust-colored stains, shed skins, or the bugs themselves. Using a flashlight to check corners and folds can help reveal hidden infestations.
“The best way to prevent bringing bed bugs home while traveling is being able to identify them and their signs in the areas where you rest or sleep,” said Eric Braun, a technical service manager at Terminix. “Once you have returned home, unpack your suitcases along the exterior of your home or in an area like the basement or garage to avoid introducing bed bugs into sleeping areas.”
While the news is unsettling for many Ohioans, experts stress that knowledge and prevention are key. Travelers are advised to remain cautious in hotels, public transit, and other shared spaces; and to take quick action if signs of bed bugs appear at home.
